Frequently Asked Question
Gmail: Use Labels (instead of Folders) to Organize Email
Last Updated a year ago
Gmail does not use folders to organize messages. Instead, Gmail uses labels. One benefit is that multiple labels can be applied to the same message which makes it easier to search and find messages. However, beware that if you delete a message, it will be erased from every label that it is attached to as well as your entire inbox.
If you use Outlook to view your email messages, the Gmail labels are mapped to Outlook folders.
