Okta: How to Use Okta and Single Sign-On (SSO)

This article explains how to setup and use the Okta dashboard to access other applications. It includes information on signing in and managing your account settings as well as how to add applications to your Okta Dashboard, update your credentials, change your security image, etc.

Sign In to Okta
NOTE: It is recommended to use a web browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
  1. Open a web browser and go to https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Type your username
  3. Type your password (if you forget your password, click the Forgot Password button, or follow these directions)
  4. Click the Sign In button

Add an Application to Your Okta Dashboard
Most business applications (apps) on your Okta dashboard are managed the IT Services department. If your account has permission to add apps, you will see an Add Apps button in the top right-hand corner of your Okta Dashboard.
  1. Sign In to Okta at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Click the +Add Apps button on the top right of your Okta Dashboard
  3. Enter the name of the application you would like to add in the Search for an app field in the upper left-hand corner of the applications page
  4. Click on the Add button when the application you are looking for appears in the dropdown menu
  5. Click the Home button at the top of the page to return to your Okta Dashboard

Delete an Application from the Okta Dashboard
Only applications that you have personally added to your Okta Dashboard may be deleted. Applications that have been assigned to you cannot be deleted from your dashboard. To delete a personal application:
  1. Sign In to Okta at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Hover over the application you would like to delete
  3. Click the gear icon that appears in the upper right-hand corner of the app button
  4. Select the General option from the settings menu that appears
  5. Click the Delete button in the lower left-hand corner of the popup box. This action cannot be undone.

Managing Your Okta Settings
To update your Okta account settings, including your secondary email address, security image, MFA factors, display language, etc., follow these steps:
  1. Sign In to Okta at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Click on your name in the upper navigation bar of your Okta Dashboard to reveal a dropdown menu
  3. Select the Settings option
You will be brought to a settings page where you may update or edit your information. Some information may not be editable. Any fields that are editable will allow you to click into them and type or select what you need to update.

Change Your Security Image
Your security image gives you additional assurance that you are logging into Okta, and not a fraudulent website. To change your security image:
  1. Sign In to Okta at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Click on your username in the top menu
  3. Select the Settings menu
  4. Navigate to the Security Image section
  5. Select Edit
  6. Select a new security image
  7. Click the Save button

Change Your Display Language
Changing your display language will adjust the language in which the text on your Okta dashboard appears. To change your display language:
  1. Sign In to Okta at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Click your username in the top menu
  3. Select the Settings menu
  4. Go to the Display language section
  5. Select Edit
  6. Select the desired display language from the list of options
  7. Click the Save button

Change Your Okta Password
If you need to change the password you use to access Okta, you can do this from the Okta Dashboard:
  1. Sign In to Okta at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Click the down arrow next to your name
  3. Select Settings
  4. Click the Edit Profile button.
    1. You may be prompted to enter your current Okta password and respond to an additional MFA prompt before you are allowed to proceed.
  5. Type in your current password in the “Change Password” window
  6. Type in your new password
  7. Type in your new password a second time
  8. Select Change Password
Your password must comply with Lower Columbia College’s password complexity settings. You will see a text box outlining the specific requirements that your new password must meet above the field where you enter your current password.

Update the Password for an Application Managed by Okta
If you make changes to your username and/or password directly in any app that you manage (rather than an app managed by LCC’s IT Services team), the new information must be updated in Okta in order for the app on your Okta Dashboard to continue working. To change your password for a specific application:
  1. Sign In to Okta at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Hover over the button representing the app whose credentials you need to update
  3. Click the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner of the app button
  4. Select Update Credentials from the application settings menu and update your application username and/or password as needed
  5. Click the Save button.

Reset a Forgotten Okta Password
You can reset your Okta password from the Okta Sign In Page.
  1. Navigate to the Okta Sign In page at https://lowercolumbia.okta.com
  2. Click the Need help signing in? link
  3. Select the Forgot Password? link located at the bottom of the page
This will allow you to reset your password via your email.
